Therapy to Help you Set Boundaries & Leave a Lasting Legacy

Hi, I’m Amy! Other than my experience working in medical settings, I actually find it hard to write about what else I do because I like to work with a variety of people presenting with a multitude of issues. I’m trained in theoretical orientations that are transdiagnostic, a fancy word that means these methods are applicable across issues and symptoms. But, here’s my best attempt to speak about the work I do. Let’s see if we can work well together!

Boundaries with yourself and in relationships

If you’re ever out walking and happen to eavesdrop on a conversation, likely it’s about people having a hard time in relationships. Identifying and creating healthy boundaries are hard, especially when there might be patterns across generations of people doing things a certain way, it’s the only way you know how, or past hurt or trauma has made it difficult to trust again. Well, is it okay to let this person back into your life? Can you really control your kids’ behaviors? Why is it easier to extend empathy to another person and yet so painfully hard to give that to yourself?

As a wife, mother, sister, friend and therapist, I have and continue to negotiate these boundaries in my own life and I know it’s also possible for you. I want to help you recognize and break away from the patterns that no longer work for you and let go of the guilt that comes from being truer to yourself. Together, we can help you have more success navigating these relationships with yourself and with others.

Discovering your legacy

Going hand-in-hand with boundary setting is the notion of knowing what you want out of life. Sometimes when I ask my clients what they want, they tell me what needs to happen, what their parents want for them, what their brother is up to or what is expected of them at work. If I were to ask you this question, what would you say? The thing is, what you value matters, and what you want out of life is important to me. Most certainly your answer will be influenced by the life you’ve lived but when you look back on your life, I want the legacy you leave behind to be your own, not someone else’s legacy for you.

Let me help you step outside of perceived notions and societal expectations to discover who you want to be. I can help you create tools to overcome obstacles that stand in the way of your hopes and dreams. Mary Oliver once asked, “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Let’s go after it with courage, patience and a tenacity you can sustain!

What it’s like to work with me

I’m cheerful and assertive. I’m not afraid to speak my mind but will do so gently. I often challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone and will encourage you to do the same. Taking incremental steps over time is how we’re going to make lasting changes!
