Understanding of Mandarin

Hi, I’m Vickie and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I’ve been a consumer of mental health services and I know what it’s like to be on the opposite side of the chair or screen. Many of my clients are drawn to working with me because they recognize a culture and identity similar to theirs. Read on and see if I can be a good fit for you!

My Lived Experience

I was born in Nanjing, China, grew up on Vancouver Island (Coast Salish lands) in Canada, and now live and work in Seattle, on Duwamish lands. I am proud to be bilingual in Mandarin, including my native Nanjing dialect, and English. I come from a family of teachers and engineers, and stand at the intersection of multiple cultures.

Becoming a therapist has been my goal since finishing high school. After my B.A. in Psychology from Queens University, I pivoted into social work, drawn to understanding people in the context of their history and their environment. I graduated with a B.A. in Social Work from the University of Victoria and went on to get a M.A. in Social Work from the University of Washington, with a Health Concentration. My work experience spans inpatient mental health, community mental health, primary care, and oncology social work.

Clinical passions

I have a heart for supporting LGBTQ+ folks, East and SE Asian clients, and BIPOC individuals. I love working with people in tech and medical fields who are experiencing professional burnout. If it’s possible to be greedy about who I want to help, I’m also skilled in supporting people going through chronic and terminal illness, and those dealing with grief and loss

What it’s like to work with me

A former supervisor once told me: “We can teach a person the skills and the language, but we can’t teach their heart to be compassionate without judgment. We need someone with a heart for this work.” In me, you’ll find heart and determination to support you in figuring out what’s working and not working for your life, come up with a plan to meet your goals, and hold you accountable to that plan. My style includes both direct, solutions focused, goal-oriented modalities and a slower, narrative approach tailored to my client’s needs.

I have a life outside of work!

I’m a purposeful cyclist, coffee and tea drinker, foodie, and enthusiastic (if not always successful) plant caretaker. I take public transportation and bike everywhere I can. I love going back to China to see my grandparents and hosting friends in my own home. During our telehealth sessions, you might meet my floppy mid-life Ragdoll cat, who is often making noise somewhere in the house or lounging on random surfaces. I love animals and plan to eventually adopt and train a therapy dog.
